AFTERMATH

‘Aftermath’ began in response to the sexual violence experienced by my colleagues and friends. The stigma around the topic inspired me to speak directly to a community of people who had survived abuse and asked questions about how this form of violence occurs. I spoke to victims as well as to those who have played a dark part in sexual violence. Participants come from every background, class, and age group from the Deep South of the USA, UK, and EU.

At it’s public showing at GlogauAIR Residency in Berlin, verbal testimonies (recorded using actors) were played through ‘silent disco’ style headphones alongside two 9ft x 5ft double sided paintings which revealed snippets of the interviews that had been redacted after the end of the interview. 18 painted texts, a video essay and over 50 pages of interview transcripts collected first hand documented and explored the nuances of sexual trauma.

In the public showing at 1 Granary Square London, 2023 a 40 page document and texts were put together alongside drawings and sketches for an intimate, diary-like dive into the topic.

*’Aftermath’ was nominated for the CSM Graduate Prize as well as the Tension Prize.
